our impact

ATTUNED was developed by educators and clinical staff at the Lucy Daniels Center, home to a therapeutic school and out-patient clinic serving children ages birth through age 11. ATTUNED is not a curriculum; it is a guide to reflective practice that provides tools for preschool and early elementary educators in three major areas:

Whether the relationship is teacher-child, teacher-parent, child-child, or teacher-teacher, all impact the daily experiences in a child’s life. Children learn and grow in the context of deep, sustained, and nurturing relationships that support secure attachment and model healthy interactions. Examine the attitudes, assumptions, respect, and responsibilities inherent in the development of trusting and meaningful relationships.

Research has shown that when teachers model positive and reflective language in the classroom, aggressive behaviors are reduced, children demonstrate higher self-esteem, and they exhibit increased motivation and independence. As teachers model and assist children in expressing, interpreting, and reflecting on their thoughts and actions at a very early age, these capacities further facilitate emotional regulation and sound social cognition.

When educators truly experience the school environment through the “eyes” of children, the emotional components and challenges become more evident. Are there components and/or practices that create anxiety or stress that may be frightening or threatening? Are procedures predictable? Are expectations clear and reasonable?
